Overfishing threatens the survival of seabirds
ScienceDaily (Feb. 28, 2012) ? From gannets to seagulls, puffins to penguins, all seabirds suffer the same drop in birth rates when the supply of fish drops to less than a third of maximum capacity. That's the result from an international study (1) on the relationships between predators and prey in seven ecosystems around the world, published in the magazine Science and coordinated by Philippe Cury, an IRD researcher. Based on nearly 450 cumulative years of observation, the research team compared the growth in fish supplies and the reproductive patterns (2) of 14 species of coastal birds. These birds mainly feed on sardines, anchovies, herring and prawns, all of which are victims of over fishing. Below the critical level of one third of the fish biomass, the birds -- and the stability of the entire ecosystem -- come under threat.
These studies also provide a reference level for the sustainable management of fisheries, so as to safeguard the bird population, which is often imperilled, and so as to maintain the healthiness of marine environments.
From the Arctic to Antarctica and from the Atlantic to the Pacific, when the supply of fish is reduced, seabirds stop reproducing. Previous studies had uncovered the relationships between the availability of food to birds and their reproductive rates, but this new international study (1) has just made a monumental discovery. Coordinated by Philippe Cury, an IRD researcher, and published in the journal Science, the study identifies the level of a critical supply of fish below which the stability of the bird population is endangered.
A third's the limit
Gannets, terns, puffins, seagulls and penguins: taking all the species together, if fish supplies drop below a third of their maximum size, then the number of baby birds born drops precipitously. Everywhere in the world. Once the amount of their prey falls below sufficiency, the seabirds fail to reproduce (2). Yet above this level, their reproduction rate doesn't increase. Abundance in the food supply didn't produce the expected result as other factors limit reproduction, such as the fact that nesting areas fill up quickly.
By demonstrating such a singular phenomenon, these studies validated empirically -- i.e. from data rather than from models -- that ecosystems, over the long term, obey similar laws. Until these studies were carried out, the basic principle of living ecologies remained theoretical. Now, for the first time, scientists have achieved a model of predator and prey behaviour based on actual observation in marine environments.
Almost 450 years of data
The research team compared almost 450 years' worth of data from all over the world to see how the supply of fish correlated with the reproduction of seabirds. To do so, the scientists concentrated on 14 species of birds in seven ecosystems around the globe. The species selected feed mainly on sardines, anchovies, herrings and other small coastline fish that fishermen regularly catch and whose populations are under pressure. Each of the ecosystems was studied for periods ranging from 15 to 40 years; and the study showed that it generally takes 13 years of data to form an accurate notion of what the maximum fish supply is in a given ecosystem.
This is the first time that so much data on the relationships between predators and prey have been brought together over such a long period of time. The scientists stressed cooperation between specialists from the north and the south made it possible to bring together such a vast quantity of information. Scores of research specialists have devoted countless years, sometimes their whole career, to these studies.
Over fishing can kill ecosystems
This study makes it plain that over fishing endangers the survival of higher-level predators such as birds. In fact, they are in direct competition with human fishermen: both groups consume about 80 million tonnes of fish per year. Small bait which are used to make meal and oils in fish farming -- such as sardines, anchovies, herring, smelt and capelin -- make up 30 % of today's catch worldwide. As global demand rises, these findings make it possible, at last, to achieve a standard against which to measure the sustainable management of fish, so as to sustain populations of seabirds, over the long term.
Seabird populations are one of the best ways to judge the health of marine ecosystems -- which the European Commission, for instance, wants to be able to monitor -- and are one of the easiest measurement barometers to use. These bird species are among the most endangered, owing to the lack of food but also to climate change and the destruction of coastal habitats where, once again, they are in competition with humans for space along the water's edge.
In order to understand the dynamics of ecosystems, it is essential to determine the key relationships between predators and prey. International authorities today have few tools by which to gauge and restrict fishing. The limit of one third of the fish population set forth by this study may not be a hard number in all cases, but it can certainly serve as a guideline for fishery management policies.

The Oscars "In Memoriam" tribute always creates some controversy, and this year was no exception.

Every year,?someone finds fault with the Oscars? "In Memoriam" tribute honoring those who passed away?over the course of the year. Usually the criticism falls on one or two entertainers who died in the past year and are left out. There was some of that this year, but a bigger focus was the new, less frenetic style of the tribute.
The?tribute was set to a soulful, cool performance of Louis Armstrong?s ?What a Wonderful World,? as sung by Grammy winner Esperanza Spalding, and included homage to, most notably, Elizabeth Taylor, Whitney Houston, Peter Falk, Jackie Cooper, and Steve Jobs. The full list can be seen here.
Unlike ceremonies? past, this year?s arrangement was mostly a series of slides featuring images of honorees, rather than a montage of film clips. There were a few audio and video excerpts sprinkled throughout, but overall, the tribute was silent except for Spalding's song.
The decision was met with mixed reviews among viewers of the broadcast. Some appreciated the serenity of the piece, claiming it was the most beautiful yet, while others?wondered if?the Oscar staff was too lazy to sort through video clips.
Lisa Milne tweeted, ?Wow quietest in memoriam ever #Oscar very nice.?
Ethan Anderton, an editor at FirstShowing.Net,?tweeted, "Someone didn't want to dig through video clips for the In Memoriam montage this year. #lazy."
Elizabeth (Elle)?felt otherwise, saying, ?Dear #Oscar, Don't save time by cutting corners on the memoriam. Give them the final moment they are due.?
And Christina Lynn adds, ?My new goal in life is to join The Academy and create better "In Memoriam" videos for the show."
Many had been wondering how the Academy would honor late pop singer and actress Whitney Houston, who died Feb. 11. Houston. who of course was better known as a singer although she did star in films, was included with a photo, but some felt it wasn't enough.
A commenter going by txguy101?wrote on the Academy?s official blog, ?What, no sound bites, clips or anything of Whitney Houston other than a black/white face pic?!....Cliff Roberson, Elizabeth Taylor and a few others had screen shots, sound bites and whatnots.??
Of course, there was also dissatisfaction with those left off the list. Perhaps the most famous name left out was that of Harry Morgan, who while best known as Col. Sherman T. Potter on TV's "M*A*S*H" also starred in more than 100?films, including "The Ox-Bow Incident" and "High Noon."
Other entertainers not seen in the tribute included Ryan Dunn of "Jackass," Charles Napier of "Rambo," stuntman Bob Anderson who handled the sword work for Darth Vader in "Star Wars," and costume designer Eiko Ishioka (?Dracula?).

We spent the holidays in the mansion last December while visiting family in Butte. Our suite included a sitting room where we opened presents on Christmas morning. But Butte's location at the intersection of Interstates 15 and 90, about midway between Yellowstone and Glacier national parks, makes it a good stopping point on a summer road trip. The two parks are about 400 miles apart. Butte is also located a mile high in the Rocky Mountains of southwestern Montana, and the mansion offers views of snowcapped peaks from many windows.
But the attractions don't end at the front door of the mansion. The surrounding blocks of Uptown Butte are filled with picturesque buildings, many of which have unfortunately gone to seed as the city has struggled for economic vitality since most of the mines closed in 1980. A good camera is mandatory for walking through Uptown Butte.
William Andrews Clark was born in 1839 in Pennsylvania and moved to Montana in 1863.

He eventually struck it rich in the mining camps and moved to the boom town of Butte in 1872. He branched out into numerous businesses, including banking, copper smelting, newspapers and railroading. He entered politics, serving as president of the Montana constitutional conventions in 1884 and 1889. He was elected by the state Legislature to the U.S. Senate in 1901, serving a single term.
In fact, his purchase of a Senate seat through the bribing of legislators led eventually to the constitutional amendment calling for the direct election of senators.
Clark also created the city of Las Vegas in 1905 as a way station for his Los Angeles to Salt Lake City railroad. Surrounding Clark County was named for him.
Clark left the Senate in 1907 and moved to a Fifth Avenue mansion in New York City, where he devoted himself to his business interests and to acquiring art. He died in 1925 at the age of 86, leaving his children a fortune of more than $200 million.
His last surviving child was Huguette Clark, who was born in Paris. She was married briefly in her 20s to a bank clerk. They parted after only nine months.
After her mother's death, Clark's busy life in New York society slowed and she rarely ventured from her home. She voluntarily moved into a hospital in the 1980s. She died in May at the age of 104, leaving a $400 million estate but no children.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) ? Rick Santorum acknowledged Wednesday that he's probably running behind Mitt Romney in Arizona, but he implored a tea party crowd not to settle for "a Johnny-come-lately to the conservative cause."
The former Pennsylvania senator told 400 people that Romney proposed a lower corporate tax rate long after Santorum had done so.
"Welcome to the party, governor. It's great to have you along," Santorum said as the crowd hooted and cheered.
Polls show Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, running ahead in Arizona, where a strong Mormon presence should help in Tuesday's GOP presidential primary. Arizona has a winner-take-all system for awarding convention delegates, so a close-second finish by Santorum would be a moral victory at best.
Santorum urged the crowd not to accept "a pyrrhic victory," which he says would be the result and come at too great a cost if the party settles for Romney because he is seen as having a better chance at defeating President Barack Obama.
The crowd laughed and clapped when Santorum said America doesn't need a leader who has been "a well-oiled weather vane," a veiled reference to Romney's changed positions on various issues.
Santorum aimed his sharpest barbs at Obama. He said the president's economic plan is "more food stamps and government dependence," comments that echoed rival Newt Gingrich's assertions about Obama's policies.
Santorum also pressed his theme that Obama has ulterior motives for some of his social policies. He said Obama cares about Americans "enough to get them addicted to government programs so he can get their vote."
Some tea party activists who warmed up the crowd labeled local Democratic lawmakers as anti-American. Republican congressional candidate Gabby Saucedo Mercer said Obama "is a communist."
