Mute logo still appearing on new Sony released Depeche Mode single

Some pointed out that there will be a Mute logo on the Depeche Mode's "Heaven" CD single. That's correct but the appearance of the logo is merely a symbolic thing only and has nothing to do with the Mute label as such as they are in no way involved. The label's boss Daniel Miller is still acting as some kind of A&R man for the band though. Depeche Mode used to be signed to the label for several decades and kinda got automatically associated with it over that period of time.

In the meantime, the new single "Heaven" and it's B-side have leaked allover the net. Although the leading track is 'a miserable attempt to stay rocky' to quote a Side-Line reader, the B-side "All that's mine" is the real pearl. Or to put it in the words of our Side-Line editor Elise Din: "The one who chose the single and banned that track to the B-side should be shot (and not Simon Cowell)."

You can order the 2 versions of the new single (a 2 track and a maxi-single) now at Amazon USA, Amazon UK and Amazon DE.

Double-arm transplant soldier 'excited for the future'

It was an exciting day for a 26-year-old veteran, the first soldier to survive after losing all four limbs in the Iraq War. On Tuesday, Brendan Marrocco wheeled himself into a news conference to show off his newly transplanted arms following his surgery last month at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

  1. Don't miss these Health stories

    1. Smokers' lungs safe for transplant, study finds

Using lung transplants from heavy smokers may sound like a cruel joke, but a new study finds that organs taken from people who puffed a pack a day for more than 20 years are likely safe.

    2. Norovirus: Why washing hands isn't enough
    3. Eating a late lunch can hinder weight loss efforts
    4. Flu outbreak spurs spike in sales of meds
    5. Flu season worsens; 29 children die

Marrocco received his new arms in a 13-hour operation that involved 16 surgeons on December 18 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

"I hated not having arms," Marrocco said during the news conference. "I was alright with not having legs. Not having arms takes so much away from you. Even your personality. You talk with your hands. You do everything with your hands, basically. And when you don?t have that you?re kind of lost for a while."

Marrocco received his two new arms from a deceased donor, becoming one of only seven people in the United States who have undergone successful double-arm transplants.

?It's given me a lot of hope for the future. I feel like I?m getting a second chance to start over after I got hurt,? Marrocco said. ?I?m excited for the future.?

His transplants involved the connection of bones, blood vessels, muscles, tendons, nerves and skin on both arms, and was the most extensive and complicated limb transplant procedure so far performed in the U.S., according to a hospital statement.

Doctors say it will take years for Marrocco to fully recover, but as he brushed the hair from his forehead with his left arm at the news conference, it appeared that he may get there far faster than predicted.

The main limiting factor in recovery is the slow growth of nerves, said the surgical team?s leader, Dr. W.P. Andrew Lee, plastic surgery chief at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Dr. Jamie Shores agreed.

?We expect it will take two to three years to see what that final function will be,? said Shores, the hospital's clinical director of hand transplantation. "The nerves make the muscles work as well as giving sensation.?

As the strength in his new arms improves, Marrocco said he is looking forward to swimming and using a handcycle. He conceded he probably won't be playing soccer, a sport he loved in high school.

To explain how much recovery Marrocco can expect, Lee pointed to the results from another patient who had a similar surgery three years ago.

?He was showing me how he was now able to tie shoe laces with his transplanted hands,? Lee said of the previous patient. ?Also, in addition to being able to tie his shoes, he sent us a video of him using chopsticks with his transplanted hand.?

Marrocco was in high spirits as he answered questions about how he?d be spending the rest of his life.

?I?ve got the job I always wanted, doing nothing,? he said with a smile. ?I guess I?ll just be a drain on society.?

In reality, Marrocco will be spending his days in physical therapy. ?He?ll be doing therapy to make his hands work six hours a day,? Shores said. ?There?s no amount of surgery we can do to make something work if the patients aren?t going to put an incredible amount of effort into this afterwards. He isn?t just sitting a home playing video games. It?s a full time job. That?s why we picked him. He?s demonstrated how hard he?s willing to work. He?s got that fighting spirit.?

Wearing a T-shirt bearing the slogan, "Keep Calm and Chive On" (a reference to a comedy news website), Marrocco joked, ?I think video games can be great therapy.?

During the news conference, Marrocco offered a message for other amputee veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, saying they should "be stubborn" and not give up hope.

"Life always gets better and you're still alive," he said. "There's a lot of people who will say you can't do something. Just do it anyway. Work your ass off. You can do it."

Marrocco's mom knows all about her son's fighting spirit.

"Brendan's always been Brendan," Michelle Marrocco of Staten Island, N.Y. said Tuesday. "He's a tough cookie, without a doubt ... He's never going to stop."

Mysteries of spider silk strength unraveled

Jan. 27, 2013 ? Scientists at ASU are celebrating their recent success on the path to understanding what makes the fiber that spiders spin -- weight for weight -- at least five times as strong as piano wire. They have found a way to obtain a wide variety of elastic properties of the silk of several intact spiders' webs using a sophisticated but non-invasive laser light scattering technique.

"Spider silk has a unique combination of mechanical strength and elasticity that make it one of the toughest materials we know," said Professor Jeffery Yarger of ASU's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and lead researcher of the study. "This work represents the most complete understanding we have of the underlying mechanical properties of spider silks."

Spider silk is an exceptional biological polymer, related to collagen (the stuff of skin and bones) but much more complex in its structure. The ASU team of chemists is studying its molecular structure in an effort to produce materials ranging from bulletproof vests to artificial tendons.

The extensive array of elastic and mechanical properties of spider silks in situ, obtained by the ASU team, is the first of its kind and will greatly facilitate future modeling efforts aimed at understanding the interplay of the mechanical properties and the molecular structure of silk used to produce spider webs.

The team published their results in a recent issue of Nature materials and their paper is titled "Non-invasive determination of the complete elastic moduli of spider silks."

"This information should help provide a blueprint for structural engineering of an abundant array of bio-inspired materials, such as precise materials engineering of synthetic fibers to create stronger, stretchier, and more elastic materials," explained Yarger.

Other members of Yarger's team, in ASU's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, included Kristie Koski, at the time a postdoctoral researcher and currently a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University, and ASU undergraduate students Paul Akhenblit and Keri McKiernan.

The Brillouin light scattering technique used an extremely low power laser, less than 3.5 milliwatts, which is significantly less than the average laser pointer. Recording what happened to this laser beam as it passed through the intact spider webs enabled the researchers to spatially map the elastic stiffnesses of each web without deforming or disrupting it. This non-invasive, non-contact measurement produced findings showing variations among discrete fibers, junctions and glue spots.

Four different types of spider's webs were studied. They included Nephila clavipes (pictured), A. aurantia ("gilded silver face"-common to the contiguous United States), L. Hesperus the western black widow and P. viridans the green lynx spider, the only spider included that does not build a web for catching prey but has major silk elastic properties similar to those of the other species studied.

The group also investigated one of the most studied aspects of orb-weaving dragline spider silk, namely supercontraction, a property unique to silk. Spider silk takes up water when exposed to high humidity. Absorbed water leads to shrinkage in an unrestrained fiber up to 50 percent shrinkage with 100 percent humidity in N. clavipes silk.

Their results are consistent with the hypothesis that supercontraction helps the spider tailor the properties of the silk during spinning. This type of behavior, specifically adjusting mechanical properties by simply adjusting water content, is inspirational from a bio-inspired mechanical structure perspective.

"This study is unique in that we can extract all the elastic properties of spider silk that cannot and have not been measured with conventional testing," concluded Yarger.

Time to retire chimps in US research labs?

Scientists have a proposal to retire all but 50 research chimpanzees kept in US federal labs. The primates would be sent to 'Chimp Haven,' a new chimp sanctuary in Louisiana. Animal rights activists applaud the move.

The NIH Council of Councils Working Group on Tuesday Jan. 22, 2013 approved a proposal, which also calls for major cuts in grants to study chimps in laboratories and no return to breeding them for research.

Government scientists have agreed that all but 50 of hundreds of chimpanzees kept for federally funded research should be retired from labs and sent to a national sanctuary.

The proposal from a National Institutes of Health committee also said all of the chimps should have plenty of room to play and climb.

The NIH Council of Councils Working Group on Tuesday approved the proposal, which also calls for major cuts in grants to study chimps in laboratories and no return to breeding them for research.

Already, nine chimpanzees arrived Tuesday at Chimp Haven outside Shreveport, La., from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette's New Iberia Research Center, which no longer has an NIH chimp research contract. Seven more are expected Thursday and another 95 will arrive over the coming months, sanctuary officials said.

The federal agency said in 2011 that it would phase out most invasive research on chimpanzees. The new 86-page recommendation describes how chimpanzees should be kept and what will be needed for any future research. Chimps should be used only if there is no other way to study a threat to human health, and the research should be approved by an independent committee with members from the public, said the Council of Councils proposal, which will be sent to the NIH's director after a 60-day public-comment period.

Animal-rights activists said they were pleased by the recommendations.

"At last, our federal government understands: A chimpanzee should no more live in a laboratory than a human should live in a phone booth," the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said in a statement.

Chimp Haven was created on 200 acres of a Caddo Parish park in Keithville in northwest Louisiana.

"We should see more than 300 chimpanzees getting moved to the federal sanctuary system," said Kathleen Conlee, the Humane Society of the United States' vice president for animal research issues.

But Conlee said she was disappointed by the recommendation to keep a group of about 50 in case further research on chimpanzees is approved.

"But I'm glad they made clear those animals should be kept to much higher standards than they are currently being kept in," she said.

Chimpanzees should be kept in groups of at least seven, with about 1,000 square feet of outdoor space per chimp ? roughly one-sixth of an acre for a group of seven, according to the proposal.

The space must include year-round outdoor access with a variety of natural surfaces such as grass, dirt and mulch, and enough climbing space to let all members of large troupes travel, feed and rest well above the ground, and with material to let them build new nests each day, the report said.

Chimp Haven's enclosures range from a quarter-acre to five acres, some of them forested and all with climbing structures.

The announcement of its first animals from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette's New Iberia Research Center was delayed a day to keep stress on them to a minimum, officials said.

"Understandably, the chimpanzees are nervous when they arrive, and we do everything possible to ease their stress. That includes limiting the number of people in the area to only those who are required to help with the chimpanzees. We also must minimize the risks of the chimpanzees being exposed to communicable diseases," veterinarian Raven Jackson said in the news release.

A $30 million cap on total spending for construction and care of Chimp Haven's retirees has been looming. That would stop NIH from contributing 75 percent of the $13,000 annual cost to care for each federal chimpanzee.

Conlee said the Humane Society will urge Congress to move money now spent on research contracts to Chimp Haven. The sanctuary gives the animals better care for less money than the labs are paid, she said.

1 officer killed, 2 wounded near La. casino

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Police on Saturday arrested a man suspected of fatally shooting a police officer and critically wounding two sheriff's deputies after allegedly setting fire to a mobile home in south Louisiana, where an elderly man's body was found.

A Chitimacha tribal officer was pronounced dead at the scene of the shootings in Charenton, while two St. Mary Parish sheriff's deputies were critically wounded and taken to local hospitals, said Louisiana State Police Trooper Stephen Hammons.

Hammons said the officers were responding to a report of an armed man walking down a road near the Cypress Bayou Casino when Wilbert Thibodeaux, 48, of Charenton allegedly shot them.

"Thibodeaux fired at the Chitimacha Officer, fatally wounding him," state police said in a news release. "As two St. Mary Deputies, who were in the same car, arrived at the scene Thibodeaux fired multiple shots hitting the deputies. During the encounter, Thibodeaux was shot."

Investigators found the burned remains of a man after extinguishing a fire at a mobile home that Thibodeaux is suspected of setting before the officers confronted him, Hammons said.

Police identified the deceased man in the mobile home as Eddie Lyons, 78, of Charenton. "Detectives suspect Lyons was shot by Thibodeaux before the fire," state police said in a news release.

Thibodeaux was treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound that wasn't considered life-threatening and released, according to Hammons, who said investigators were questioning him Saturday evening. Charges against him are pending.

The state Fire Marshal's office is investigating the fire.

"Today is a difficult day for our partners in St. Mary Parish," Col. Mike Edmonson, the State Police superintendent, said in a statement. "My thoughts and prayers are with the deputies and the officer's families tonight. I know the coming days and weeks will be difficult ones for the men and women of the Chitimacha Police Department and the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office. We will assist their agencies in any way we can during these trying times."

The casino is run by the Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana and is less than a quarter-mile from the scene of the shootings. Hammons said the shootings occurred near but not on tribal land.

"Everybody is just in shock. It's small-town America," said Jacqueline Junca, the tribe's secretary and treasurer.

Police didn't immediately release the names of the officers. Authorities said they will do so at a Monday news conference.

Tribe councilman Toby Darden said the slain officer was married and had two grown children, but he declined to give his name.

"He's a real great guy. Extremely dedicated to his job. Very brave," Darden said.

He was one of seven full-time officers who patrol a 260-acre reservation that has roughly 150 homes, a grocery store, a small school and government offices.

"Everybody knows the officers personally," Darden said. "It's devastating."

Junca said the tribe has around 1,200 members, roughly half of whom live on the reservation.

Access to and from the casino was restricted for roughly 90 minutes as a precautionary measure while police responded to the shooting, said casino spokeswoman Nancy Herrington. Charenton is located about 45 miles southeast of Lafayette.

"We are very much in business and have been," Herrington said later Saturday. "We have events tonight. All of those are taking place."

A spokeswoman for the sheriff's office and a tribal police dispatcher referred questions about the shootings to the State Police.

"We've got a lot of unanswered questions," State Police Capt. Doug Cain said.

One of the injured deputies was taken to a hospital in New Orleans and the other was taken to a Lafayette hospital. Both were listed in critical but stable condition Saturday evening, Hammons said.

My Child Has Autism ? What Now? | Natural Holistic Health Blog

When we become parents, we want the best for our children.? This is especially true for their health.? We view sonograms anxiously before they?re born, and we await word from the doctor that everything is as it should be when they arrive in this world.? We take heed of every little cough and sneeze in an effort to keep them healthy.? That?s one of the many reasons that a diagnosis of autism is so devastating.

Children with autism may display enough signs for a clear diagnosis before one year of age, and almost always do so by the time they?re three years old.? The news that a child is autistic can feel devastating, but it doesn?t have to be.? If we can keep our presence of mind, we can explore the options and get the best possible treatment for our children.? With proper care, many autistic children can grow up to be independent and well-adjusted adults.

It?s hard to know exactly what to do if you?ve never been down this road before.? Here are some tips to get you going in the right direction.

* Understand where your child is on the autism spectrum.? The term ?autism? is actually used interchangeably with several related disorders, each one with its own characteristics.? Some forms of autism are mild enough that they won?t make a big difference in a child?s life, while others require more treatment.? If you?re not sure where your child stands, talk to his doctor about it.? And if he doesn?t explain it sufficiently, consider seeing another one.

* Learn about treatment options.? There is currently no cure, but there are many treatment options that can produce favorable results.? Therapy can improve an autistic child?s language and social skills, and medication can help alleviate emotional and physical symptoms.

* Get support.? Raising an autistic child can be very trying, draining parents both physically and emotionally.? Counseling and respite care can help parents cope with the challenges.

* Make sure the needs of your other children are met.? Being the sibling of an autistic child presents its own unique challenges.? Siblings may resent the extra attention the autistic child requires, and they may become frustrated with the questions and misunderstanding of others.? Making special time for siblings and providing the opportunity for counseling will help them deal with these issues, and maybe even strengthen their relationships with their autistic brother or sister.

* Stay informed about new developments in the fight against autism.? Autism still isn?t well understood by doctors, but research is beginning to provide some answers and bring forth ideas for new treatments.? Staying on top of the latest autism news can give parents hope and encouragement.

We Recommend:

Since it is a spectrum disorder, autism affects children in different ways, and no two autistic children are exactly alike. This makes things very confusing for parents who are battling to come to terms with what is best for their child, as signs of autism vary greatly. It may be helpful to devise an autism symptoms checklist to aid in diagnosing the disorder.

While there is a place for prescription medication in certain cases of autism, careful consideration and caution should be taken due to possible side effects. There are also natural treatments for this disorder, including herbal and homeopathic answers which can help maintain harmony, health, and systemic balance in the brain and nervous system, without side effects or sedation.

Mozilla reveals Firefox OS Developer Preview Phone

Mozilla reveals Firefox OS Developer Preview Phone

Mozilla said it won't be launching its own hardware to run the in-development Firefox OS when it's finished, but the company has just announced a "Developer Preview Phone" for putting the OS through its paces. It's not quite the same as the mystery device we saw sporting Firefox OS at CES, but its specs seem almost as basic. The handset will feature a 3.5-inch HVGA touchscreen and 3-megapixel camera on the outside, with a 1GHz Snapdragon S1 CPU, half a gig of RAM, 4GB of microSD-expandable storage and WiFi, 2G and 3G antennae inside. Sure, that processor isn't a beast, but an 800MHz S1 does just fine in the Lumia 610. A 1580mAh battery will keep the carrier-unlocked phone running, and Mozilla is promising OTA updates to Firefox OS to keep devs, well, up to date. At the moment, we have no idea how much the phone will cost, but the first units are expected to be available next month.

The developer handset is called the Keon, according to creator Geekphone's website, and while not mentioned in the Mozilla Hacks blog post, it appears to have a more powerful cousin called the Peak. It's got a 4.3-inch qHD screen, 8-megapixel back-facing camera (with flash) and 2-megapixel shooter round the front. A 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 CPU and larger 1800mAh battery are within, but storage, RAM and connectivity specs are the same as the smaller Keon. Mozilla may not be formally promoting this as its own dev handset, but it was still included in the picture which accompanied the announcement (see above: the Keon is in orange, the Peak in white). We're getting in contact with Mozilla to clarify, and will update you when we hear back.

93% Zero Dark Thirty

All Critics (186) | Top Critics (42) | Fresh (173) | Rotten (13)

Chastain makes Maya as vivid as a bloodshot eye. Her porcelain skin, delicate features and feminine attire belie the steel within.

No doubt Zero Dark Thirty serves a function by airing America's dirty laundry about detainee and torture programs, but in its wake, there's a crying need for a compassionate Coming Home to counter its brutal Deer Hunter.

While "Zero Dark Thirty" may offer political and moral arguing points aplenty, as well as vicarious thrills,as a film it's simply too much of a passable thing.

From the very first scenes of Zero Dark Thirty, director Kathryn Bigelow demonstrates why she is such a formidable filmmaker, as adept with human emotion as with visceral, pulse-quickening action.

A timely and important reminder of the agonizing human price of zealotry.

Not only is Zero Dark Thirty one of the year's best movies, it's an inspiring one to share with your daughters. That is, if they're old enough to deal with explicit torture scenes.

It is played out in a matter-of-fact way, like a documentary. Step by step we follow the evidence with Maya as she doggedly pursues Osama Bin Laden for more than a decade.

With a little editing and some greater humanity infused into it, this could have been brilliant. 'Zero Dark Thirty' is solid and good overall, but not great. (Full Content Review for Parents also available)

I'd call it efficient. I would not call it inspired, groundbreaking, brilliant, innovative -- or even particularly effective as drama.

The fact that commentators, pundits, and politicians on both sides of the political spectrum are condemning Zero Dark Thirty is a sure sign that director Kathryn Bigelow and journalist-turned-screenwriter Mark Boal have done something right.

What makes Zero Dark Thirty such a fascinating film is that it plays both as an engaging procedural thriller and a serious examination of the country's moral compass. It is already doing what great movies do-starting conversation.

It asks its audience: When does the risk of doing something outweigh the risk not doing anything? What are the costs of revenge? Where will the "war on terror" take us next?

Zero Dark Thirty is the perfection The Hurt Locker promised.

Zero Dark Thirty is a model of artistic restraint, a film letting fantastic history trump the need to score partisan points.

An effective and expertly made film, but a more character-driven story would've added some flesh to the bones of a great, true story.

It's particularly comparable to Zodiac, while there are also obvious parallels to Homeland, and a riveting, Call Of Duty-type finale.

This is an instant classic.

Zero Dark Thirty is a gripping, authentic-feeling account of the dark side of the war on terror.

Chastain's Maya is a red-tressed Pre-Raphaelite madonna with the cleft chin and chiseled features of an action hero.

After the lengthy torture scenes, procedural repetition takes over until the murkily-filmed Seal Team 6 raid. But Jessica Chastain is quite convincing as a CIA operative dedicated to her job.

A well-acted, well-intentioned, disjointed mess.

A well-produced and well-acted procedural/thriller film that stays focused on the frustrating nuts and bolts CIA led search for the elusive Al Qaeda leader.

A gripping, almost necessary, piece of filmmaking.

The picture acknowledges the very real presence of torture on the post-9/11 landscape -- had the filmmakers ignored the subject, the movie would be little more than vile, jingoistic nonsense.

(Jessica) Chastain's powerful performance, for which she deserves a best actress Academy Award, drives the film. She has no private life, no friends. Her obsession drives her.

Playing House with the Coxes: Scrapbook Moments

Harper and Gavin are the cutest little buddies. ?I could not have asked for a better sibling relationship at this point in their lives. ?Sure, there are moments where they bite each other, get into competitions at the dinner table to see who can scream the loudest, and (funnest of all) try to steal each others food. ?But to that I say, who doesn't?! ?I am so happy that my kiddos have each other's friendship- they are quite the sibling duo. ?Here are some fun moments that I have been allowed to be a part of as Gavin and Harper's mama:

Peek-a-boo:
Gavin loves to try and teach Harper how to play peek-a-boo.

He is so enthusiastic to get to teach her something and she is so enamored with her big brother. She hasn't quite yet mastered the art of peek-a-booing herself, but what's the rush when you have this guy to crack you up?

The Very Hungry Caterpillar:?

Okay- this is only the best children's book in the history of the world. ?No arguments. Where else can you learn colors, fruits, days of the week, counting, the life cycle of a butterfly and that eating a whole lot of junk food on a Saturday will give you a stomach ache? ?This is also the newest book that Gavin has started reading...and I seriously mean reading. ?(Okay, I probably mean "memorizing what happens on each page and learning a few key phrases that will make his mother squeal with delight when she hears them", but that didn't stop the "My baby can read" people, did it?!) ?Gavin loves to read the "patter book" talk about each of the fruits on their day of the week and says "he's still hunnry.." Genius? ?I think so.

It's especially cute when he reads to Harper. ?She usually has to be preoccupied with something else to help her not to try to grab at the pages while brother is reading, but she is none-the-less very impressed with Gavin's reading ability.

Little Miss Messy:?

Okay- so I seriously have no idea how this happened. ?One minute, I'm bringing this tiny baby girl home from the hospital and the next minute, I'm picking up banana puffs that she poured over the entire living room. ?

No joke. ?Harper can now pull up...and is also enjoying the culinary wonder that is (are?) Gerber baby puffs. ?The other night I left a container- lid closed- on top of the coffee table. ?Harper managed to crawl over, pull up on the table, grab the container, sit back down, open them and then proceeded to eat her coveted snack. ?

I know that some people might think of this as the minutia of life. ?We've traded in a social life for banana puffs, reading about current events to reading patter books and traveling the world to making trips back and forth to the potty. I'm reminded daily thought that these moments are fleeting; that while the days seem to creep sometimes, the years really do fly. ?To those that think this is life's minutia, I'll say that the world can wait. I've got a floor full of banana puffs to treasure, tiny little butts to wipe, wet noses to catch and snuggles to soak in.

Breathing program may help save newborns' lives

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Training midwives and other birth attendants to help babies start breathing immediately after birth may prevent stillbirths and newborn deaths in the developing world, two new studies suggest.

So-called birth asphyxia - when babies are born not breathing - is one of the major causes of newborn death in regions with limited resources, researchers said.

The Helping Babies Breathe program, launched by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), trains birth attendants to immediately dry and warm babies - and to start breathing for babies with a bag and mask if they don't breathe on their own within one minute.

Reducing infant mortality in the developing world is one of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals - but progress has been slow, according to Dr. Jeffrey Perlman from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, who helped implement Helping Babies Breathe in Tanzania.

"The majority of deliveries in resource-limited areas are done by the midwife, and the midwife wasn't really taught how to deal with a baby once they were born," Perlman told Reuters Health. Instead, he said, midwives tend to focus on the mother immediately after the birth.

"If you can just teach them, when the baby's born, to immediately dry the baby off... that drying and a little bit of stimulating will probably get 90 to 93 percent of babies breathing that weren't breathing before," said Perlman, one of the authors of a study published Monday in Pediatrics.

"That's the most exciting part, that something very simple can save many, many lives."

Perlman and his colleagues compared about 8,000 babies born at eight hospitals before birth assistants were trained in the breathing program to almost ten times as many babies born afterward.

Program leaders initially taught the breathing techniques to 40 "master trainers" from the eight hospitals over two days. Some master trainers then went to other hospitals and health centers in the area to teach midwives and other health care providers, in what the research team called "a cascade model approach."

The researchers found newborn deaths dropped from 13 per 1,000 babies to seven per 1,000 once Helping Babies Breathe was implemented. The rate of stillbirth fell from 19 per 1,000 babies before to just over 14 per 1,000 after.

In a second study from Southern India, another set of researchers saw no change in newborn deaths after the same program was taught to almost 600 birth attendants in rural health centers.

However, stillbirth rates fell from 30 per 1,000 babies to 23 per 1,000 after the training, Dr. Shivaprasad Goudar from Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in Belgaum, Karnataka and colleagues found.

"We really need to focus on the early steps of resuscitation for the developing world, because that's where most of the mortality is occurring - in other words, just getting babies to breathe," said Dr. John Kattwinkel from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, who wrote a commentary published with the new studies.

"In many countries, well over half of the deliveries occur out in the clinics and in the homes. That's what this program is designed for," he told Reuters Health. "It would be a terrific strategy to implement widely."

Perlman estimated that expanding the program to all of Tanzania over the next couple of years will cost about $5 million.

According to United Nations data, 32 babies die in India for every 1,000 live births and 26 per 1,000 die in Tanzania. In the United States overall, four babies die for every 1,000 live births - but the figures are much higher in certain poorer parts of the country.

The Helping Babies Breathe program is supported in part by the Laerdal Foundation for Acute Medicine. Laerdal Medical manufactures breathing simulators and other products related to the program's work.

According to Kattwinkel, the evidence provided by these two studies should help conjure up support for Helping Babies Breathe and allow it to spread to other limited-resource areas.

Perlman agreed, saying the program is now being pursued in about 70 countries worldwide. The most important component, he added, is that it must have government support locally, as has been the case in Tanzania.

"There are very few things that you can do simply that you can save, even in the worst case, three-quarters of a million (babies)," Perlman said.

Cuba fights to contain cholera in Havana

Roberto Leon

Arismael Nieto's job is to pour a diluted bleach solution over the hands of every commuter at this Havana bus station, and make sure everyone steps on a cloth soaked with the solution to clean the bottom of their shoes.

By Mary Murray, Producer, NBC News

Camilo, my 7-year old grandson in Cuba, has never been shy about asking for presents ? especially when he knows I?m heading to Havana from that big shopping mall 90 miles away. His usual list includes a massive bag of M&M peanut candy, additions to what?s become a pretty pricey collection of Schleich resin animals, and goofy gags second-grade boys find funny, such as hand buzzers or that classic snake-in-a-can. When Camilo got on the phone with me last weekend, he only rattled off one item.

?Aba,? (that?s what he calls me?short for "abuela", which is "grandma" in Spanish), ?bring me soap.?

?Soap? You want soap?? I repeated, convinced I must have heard him wrong.

?Si?, he insisted. ?Jabon!?

Now he has me worried that I need to make an emergency supply-run for detergent, shampoo, dishwashing soap and other basics. The last time soap was in short supply in Cuba was in the 1990s but, if this kid is asking for soap, the situation must be dire. He?s about as germaphobe as your average stray puppy. Like a lot of little boys, he needs to be reminded that taking a shower means actually standing under the water.

Camilo, however, didn?t want just any soap. He was looking for what he calls ?the soap that melts.? He wanted me to bring him an alcohol-based instant hand sanitizer.

Then he made it clear why. ?Aba, there?s cholera here,? he said.

As it turns out, Camilo had spilled the beans a full 72 hours before the Cuban Health Ministry issued a formal communiqu? on what had been rumored since the start of the year -- cholera had surfaced in the city of Havana, home to 2.2 million people.

The announcement explained that 51 new cases of cholera had been diagnosed in the Cuban capital along with a spike in the number of people suffering from "diarrheal diseases." The ministry made no mention of any fatalities. The public was being advised to be more careful with personal hygiene, boil all drinking water or use purification drops and thoroughly wash all fruits and vegetables, but to stay assured that Cuba?s massive public health machine was implementing preventive measures meant to ?contain? and ?eradicate? the disease.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, cholera is a bacterial infection in the intestine that can range from mild to severe. In the latter case, an infected person will experience ?dehydration and shock" that, if left untreated, can lead to death "within hours.? The CDC estimates that every year there are up to 5 million cases and more than 100,000 deaths from cholera worldwide.

In most cases, the disease takes about a week to run its course, and during that time, warns the CDC, cholera is highly contagious. Spread hand to mouth, the bacteria is usually found in water or food sources contaminated by an infected person?s feces.

Contamination
A single food vendor at a baseball game appears to be the cause of the Havana outbreak. In early January, apparently, contaminated sandwiches or soda were sold during a packed game in the city?s main sports arena, the Latin American Stadium, located in a neighborhood called Cerro.

"That's why people from different parts of the city tested positive for cholera at the same time,? said a medical source, not authorized to speak on the record but who claims to have first-hand knowledge of the findings from the epidemiological task force assigned to trace the origins of the outbreak.

Roberto Leon

Officials from Cuba's Health and Epidemiology department inspected this pizza parlor located not too far from where the outbreak started in Havana and closed it down.

At Wednesday's nighttime game between Havana's beloved Industriales and last year's national champs, Los Tigres de Ciego de Avila, hawkers should have been making a killing on what had been one of the season's most sought-after tickets. Instead, 80 percent of the seats remained empty. Those die-hard fans who did show up were not allowed into the stadium until they sterilized their shoes and hands. Benches were wiped down with a disinfectant, and the floors hosed down with the same 0.5 percent bleach solution. And there was nothing to munch on during the three-and-a-half-hour game. All food stands have been temporarily shut down.

The same goes for many mom-and-pop cafeterias across the capital. "Last week, officials from Health and Epidemiology inspected our place and then they closed us down," said one owner of a pizza parlor not too far from where the outbreak started. "They said it's to stop the spread of cholera but no one?s saying how long we have to stay closed." His only consolation is that this month he doesn?t have to pay taxes or his monthly licensing fee.

Upset about his loss of income, he is also irked by the fact that some state-run food establishments passed the inspections, so they are being allowed to stay open. Many though are only authorized to sell bottled water, canned drinks and commercially packaged food.

Arismael Nieto usually changes the light bulbs and fixes broken chairs at Havana?s Bus Terminal. For the last two weeks, he?s been drafted on the city?s anti-cholera campaign. He stands by the one door opened at the station and his job is to pour a diluted bleach solution over the hands of every commuter, and make sure everyone steps on a cloth soaked with the solution to clean the bottom of their shoes. No one gets on a bus or leaves the building without Nieto?s OK.

Now, picture this procedure happening at every school from kindergarten to college, every public building, factory, lunch room, hospital, health clinic, department store, train depot and movie theater.

Chlorine a "necessary inconvenience"
Over the summer, two people who live in the Havana neighborhood of Fontanar thought they had the flu but tested positive for cholera. It was believed that they were exposed on the bus ride from eastern Cuba, an area of the country that had an outbreak earlier last year. In late August, Cuba revealed that cholera had killed three people and infected 417 in Granma province, some 450 miles east of Havana.

Roberto Leon

Signs such as this one are posted everywhere in Havana, alerting people to go to the hospital as soon as they experience any of the symptoms of cholera.

Cuba?s cholera treatment protocol has doctors knocking on doors and testing anyone with possible cholera symptoms. A positive test means an automatic trip to one of the city hospitals for a more comprehensive test. While most suspected cases go to Havana?s Tropical Medicine Institute, known by its initials IPK, a pediatric hospital and a maternity hospital have also been designated to admit cholera cases. In addition, the protocol mandated that all of Havana?s 85 neighborhood health clinics set aside a room with ventilation and a closed door as a place to quarantine suspected cholera cases until an ambulance arrives to transport the patient to the hospital.

Once hospitalized, a comprehensive history is taken that focuses on identifying all the people the patient has come in contact with over the past weeks. Health workers are dispatched to locate those persons to test them for cholera and administer a free prophylactic dose of doxycycline.

Although none of the guidelines cited by the CDC recommend using antibiotics for cholera prevention, the Cuban Health Ministry believes otherwise. Hundreds of thousands of Doxycycline tablets, apparently readied in warehouses for just such an emergency, were distributed to hospitals and health clinics one morning earlier this week?another sign that Cuba is well-prepared to tackle this outbreak.

Are people complaining? You bet. They hate the chlorine smell. They say the solution stings but many would agree with Angela Linares, a nurse raising a 13-year old daughter alone, who said: ?It?s a necessary inconvenience.?

?No one wants cholera, especially since we know so little about this disease,? she said.

Linares was right. Until last year, the last reported cholera outbreak in Cuba was recorded almost a century ago.

Upon learning this fact, I became even more baffled that my 7-year-old grandson mentioned cholera days before the government admitted the outbreak.

As it turns out, his primary school had been put on alert early last week, and the kids learned about the intestinal bug and prevention at a school assembly. Community physicians were dispatched to all of the city?s 650 schools to not only give a crash course on cholera but hand out soap to every classroom.

Still, it wasn?t until after the Health Ministry?s warning that Cuban state media began running public service announcements -- considerably behind the curve of Havana's second graders.

Resolution 2013: Fitness with Zsuzsi Bork

Paying $100+ a month to run in place on a treadmill, doing the same repetitive motion in a musty gym for an hour and change day in and day out, is my idea of hell. It?s just too much like The Matrix for my taste. But, massage therapist and yoga instructor Zsuzsi Bork has a better way to achieve fitness for people like me. Here?s what Zsuzsi had to say about incorporating yoga and massage into a holistic fitness routine for 2013:

Yoga1

ZB: The first time I stepped onto a yoga mat was March of 2010.? I quickly realized that I wanted to become a yoga instructor, both to further my own practice and to share my enthusiasm with others.? I started the teacher training process in February of 2011 and taught my first class in May of that year.

The Health Benefits of Yoga
ZB: There are so many health benefits!? Not just with strength and flexibility, but also with your posture, breath, and an overall healthy mind.? I have found that it calms so much anxiety and improves concentration.

I was able to see the health benefits quickly in my own body after I started practicing yoga.? I had gained weight, I couldn?t get halfway to reaching my toes, and I just didn?t feel good about myself.? Once I became consistent with my yoga practice, there was a dramatic change.? I lost over 50 lbs., my flexibility increased, and I felt amazing.? Not only did it help me physically, but in so many other areas of my life.

How to Begin/Improve Yoga Practice
ZB: Whether just beginning or improving, quiet that voice in your head that tells you that you are not good enough. It takes much more strength to learn when it is time to rest, instead of feeling you have to muscle your way through it. No matter how far you get in your yoga practice, there is always room for learning.

Yoga2

The Health Benefits of Massage Therapy
ZB: The same as yoga, there can be many benefits to massage, including:

* Managing anxiety & depression
* Better range of motion
* Reducing pain
* Improving sleep
* Helping with cramps & PMS
* Relieving side effects of cancer treatment
* Increased energy
* Boosts immunity
* Improved digestion

Massage1

Yoga and Massage: Synergistic Effects
ZB: Both yoga and massage are good for your health and well-being. They share a number of benefits and work in tandem to increase flexibility, reduce pain, and reduce stress. Yoga and massage are complimentary practices that treat the body holistically.

On Incorporating Fun
ZB: To wind down from all my activities, I like to meet up with some of my closest friends at the Town House Bar, either to play darts, shoot some pool, or even to shake it on the dance floor!

Pool

On Incorporating Rest
ZB: I think everyone needs a day of lounging around the house! A day to take time for yourself for anything that you would like.

Lounge1

It may be a day to catch up on your emails as you drink some tea, or even just watching your favorite shows on TV.

Taking Pets to Hawaii ? Quarantine Not Required, But It Is an ... - Blogs

A bit of work to get here, but oh so worth it!

As I sat in the Honolulu Animal Quarantine waiting room with several other equally frazzled pet owners, a very unfortunate young man was trying to get his dog released but lacked the ability to pay the $165 fee.? He explained how he?d lost everything to theft, didn?t have the cash or i.d. needed, and couldn?t get to a friend on the island and back in time to keep from having his dog moved to the quarantine station.? He was upset but pleasant, the officials were empathetic, but it was a no go.

At that point the woman sitting next to me ? who herself had experienced an arduous journey with a dog and cat ? asked how much money he needed. Tired, aggravated, and flushed from the heat she muttered something under her breath then stood up, walked over to the window and said (with an expletive or two) that she would pay for the release of the dog.? Without pause she counted out the cash as we cheered.? She accepted the gratitude and a hug from the young man, and when he offered to pay her back she just told him to pay it forward.

That generous and kind person is now becoming a resident of Hawaii, and she is a stellar example of the type of person who would never have come here had the new rules not made it possible for her to bring her pets, leaving the state poorer for turning away people like her.? So why is it difficult for pet owners to move to Hawaii?

Back in 1912 Hawaii established a 120 day quarantine policy for carnivorous animals in order to keep rabies out of what was then the Territory of Hawaii.? The rules remained unchanged when Hawaii became the 50th state in 1959 up until 1997 when a 30 day quarantine went into effect ? more lenient, but still a stumbling block for many pet owners.

In 2003 the present ?five days or less program? replaced the need to quarantine pets in Hawaii at all, much to the relief of people who previously found the options of lengthy quarantine or giving away their pets equally untenable.? The new policy is also more in keeping with the warm, friendly and family oriented culture of Hawaii, so it just makes sense all the way around ? yet Hawaii must still be strict to keep the state rabies-free.

Hawaii now puts the burden of proof on the shoulders of pet owners, and they provide clear yet inflexible guidelines on exactly how to go about bringing pets into the state.? It is a lengthy process which can be complicated, and woe to anyone who misses a deadline ? but with careful planning anyone can do it.

The Hawaii State Department of Agriculture Animal Quarantine outlines the process in detail, but here are the main points:

  • Allow at least five months, even though the waiting period is 120 days. The waiting period starts after all the shots and blood work is done and received.
  • Dogs and cats will need original records of vaccinations signed by a veterinarian, and this can be hard to obtain if you have been lax about shots or have moved.
  • After the animals have two rabies vaccinations at least 30 days apart, the blood work is sent to the lab to be checked, and the results are then sent to Hawaii.? At that point you can find out online when the first day your pet is allowed into the state.
  • No more than 14 days before the pets arrive in Hawaii a veterinarian must apply a certain flea/tick preparation to the animals, and no more than 10 days before the vets must prepare a health certificate. Note that these are for the dates you are actually traveling.
  • Pets must arrive by 3:30 pm in order for them to be released directly, otherwise they are transferred to the quarantine site and held up to 5 days (for the ?five days or less? option, which costs $225).

The next hurdle is getting your pet there ? the airlines can only accommodate a few pets on each flight, whether they fly in the passenger compartment, as baggage, or as cargo. Because the pets must get to Hawaii in the afternoon, the morning flights from the mainland book the animal spaces early, and information about pet bookings will not show up when you look online for tickets.

You must make sure that the health certificate includes a statement by the vet that states that your pet can withstand temperatures of 45 degrees, and some airlines will demand a letter to this effect by the vet.? This is because the airlines have made changes to make sure that all pets arrive safely and in good health and can tolerate the cooler (but still climate controlled and pressurized) environment of the cargo hold.? Oddly enough, they do not require anything stating that the animals can withstand high temperatures even though dogs are documented to have died of heat stroke on flights.

If you are flying a big dog (more than 29? from the top of the head to the ground) you may not be able to fly them as baggage on your flight or even as cargo because some plane cargo doors are too small to fit a larger crate.? If you don?t want your dog flown all over and kenneled overnight in some strange city, you must figure out which airlines will fly pets nonstop and still get them to Hawaii by 3:30.

Hawaiian Airlines does not take any dog over 70 lbs as baggage. They can fly a larger dog as cargo (which costs several times as much, even on the same flight), but you must arrange to have a backup contact in Hawaii in case your own flight is delayed.

Alaska, United, and Delta currently either don?t have flights that arrive in time (from Seattle) or have no capacity to fit a large crate, but flights on some of these airlines are available with smaller pets.? All airlines are not equal when it comes to safely transporting animals, so definitely spend time finding out which are the best.

Cats are easier to ship than all but the tiniest dogs, and the cost to fly them varies with airlines, but the airlines allow on a few animals of any kind on each flight (ie three or less). You will have to take them out of their carry-on container and hold them when you go through the security scanners, and because ? unbelievably ? people use pets to smuggle all kinds of things, further tests may be performed to make sure that your pet is not carrying drugs or other contraband. So if your cat will be freaked out by this, do bring a leash of some sort so that the cat can?t get away ? remember, you will be standing there in bare feet with your valuables in bins, and chasing a frightened cat is a nightmare at best

The pets flying as luggage or cargo will need to get to the airport at least three hours early in some cases, and it is advised that you find deep water bowls and freeze water in them overnight so that the pets have water available on the flight as the ice melts.? You are permitted to put any kind of soft bedding in that is absorbent, and familiar blankets etc is always a good idea.

Bailey loves his new home in Hawaii!

My experience:

Overall, it was very positive.? My big dog had to fly cargo on Hawaiian, but they carefully explained their requirements in advance, offered tips to make the pet comfortable, and were friendly.? We were at the airport by 5:30 a.m. to get the dog settled for a 9 a.m. flight.? My cat flew with me as a carry on baggage on Alaska Airlines, and although it was cramped to have her at my feet and my overstuffed large handbag on my lap for six hours it was doable, and the cat was quiet. I arrived in Honolulu about the same time as my dog, and was met at the gate by an official who took the cat to the quarantine office.

Some glitches with family schedules meant that I had to plan last minute alternatives causing me to spend hours on the phone with the airlines, but as it turns out it prevented larger problems since the pet spaces were already booked on the original flights, which would not have accommodated my large dog.

A huge thing to note: the reservation agents often don?t know or don?t understand the pet flight rules themselves.? You need to check and double check the facts.

Finding the Animal Quarantine in Honolulu Airport was not straightforward, even though an agent met me at the gate.? This was experienced by others from different flights as well but is not a big deal unless you are short on time.? The agents in the quarantine office were very pleasant, and watched my bags when I went to pick up the rental car.? I had reserved a minivan in order to make sure that the dog?s crate fit, which turned out to be good because they will not let you take the animals out of the crate while at the airport.

Here were the highlights:

The wonderful, friendly, pet loving staff at the Edgewater Hotel where I stayed with the dog and cat in order to make the early flight. They were not bothered by the chaotic nature of my arrival, didn?t bat an eyelash at the battered old suitcase I brought, they lavished the dog with attention, and were careful with the cat. They took the pet water bowls to the staff lounge and froze them overnight and made sure we had them following the 3:30 a.m. wake up call the morning of my flight. I repacked my bags and left unwanted clothes etc, as well as the disposable litter pan and got no complaints. With winter rates and because pets stay free of charge it was competitively priced, and it felt like a luxurious reward after the packing, moving, planning, and traveling with the pets, but the whole experience was so positive and the staff so professional and friendly that I would do it again even at standard rates.

The vets at NW Veterinary Hospital who squeezed my dog in for the ?letter of acclimation? at the last minute, examined my dog and certified that he could withstand 45 degree temperature, and didn?t charge.

Learning that my cat, who turns into a whirling dervish of teeth and claws in the hands of strangers would be completely docile when I held her for exams and through airline security.

The Edgewater staff, the vets, the inspirational woman named Sandy who helped the young man get his dog from quarantine, the wonderful people where I live who offered to pick me up at the airport and welcomed me with flowers and a nice dinner, and my son who took a couple of days off work to help get me to two airlines with two pets on time, all helped transform what seemed to be an ordeal into what is turning out to be a wonderful adventure.

So to sum it up ? allow plenty of time, read the fine print, double check the airlines, make sure you prepay all fees or arrive with cash, do what you can to make yourself comfortable, and enjoy your new adventure!

Bailey and his new buddy Rango play on the beach everyday, he loves it here!

5 hurt in shootings at gun shows in Ohio, Ind., NC

MEDINA, Ohio (AP) ? Accidental shootings at gun shows in North Carolina, Indiana and Ohio left five people injured Saturday.

At the Dixie Gun and Knife Show in Raleigh, a 12-gauge shotgun discharged as its owner unzipped its case for a law enforcement officer to check at a security entrance, injuring three people, state Agriculture Department spokesman Brian Long said.

Two bystanders were hit by shotgun pellets and taken to a hospital. A retired deputy sheriff suffered a slight hand injury.

The shotgun's owner, 36-year-old Gary Lynn Wilson, brought the weapon to the show to find a private buyer, Long said. Sheriff Donnie Harrison said that it was too early to know whether Wilson might be charged but that it appeared to be an accident.

The North Carolina show, which is held at the state fairgrounds, is a quarterly event that usually draws thousands of people. The two-day show shut down early Saturday but will reopen Sunday.

In Indianapolis, police said a 54-year-old man was injured when he accidentally shot himself while leaving a gun show.

Emory L. Cozee was loading his .45 caliber semi-automatic when he shot himself in the hand as he was leaving the Indy 1500 Gun and Knife show at the state fairgrounds, state police said. Loaded personal weapons aren't allowed inside the show.

Cozee, of Indianapolis, was hospitalized for treatment. Police say the shooting was accidental and no charges will be filed.

And in Ohio, a gun dealer in Medina was checking out a semi-automatic handgun he had bought Saturday when he accidentally pulled the trigger, injuring his friend, police said. The gun's magazine had been removed from the firearm, but one round remained in the chamber, police said.

Police Chief Pat Berarducci said it appears the bullet ricocheted off the floor and struck the friend in the arm and leg. The man was taken by helicopter to a hospital 30 miles north in Cleveland, Berarducci said. His condition wasn't immediately known.
