HBT: Marlins demote Zambrano to bullpen

Miami trading for Carlos Zambrano this offseason involved little risk, as the Cubs covered all but $3 million of his $18 million salary and the Marlins only had to part with Chris Volstad in the swap.

Unfortunately that low-risk move hasn?t paid off, as Zambrano went 5-9 with a 4.54 ERA and 83/67 K/BB ratio in 115 innings spread over 20 starts. And today the Marlins demoted him to the bullpen, filling his rotation spot with Wade LeBlanc.

Zambrano actually got off to a strong start, sporting a 2.81 ERA as recently as early June, but since then he?s 1-6 with a 7.62 ERA and more walks (38) than strikeouts (27) in 41 innings while allowing opponents to hit .290.

He?s mostly been a model citizen in Miami, which is certainly a change from his Chicago days, but of course that doesn?t seem quite as important when you can?t throw the ball over the plate. And dating back to the beginning of last season Zambrano now has a 4.70 ERA and 123 walks in 261 innings while managing just 6.2 strikeouts per nine frames.

Syria rebels call for weapons, keep hold on Aleppo

Syrian rebels held off an offensive by regime forces in Aleppo as the head of the exiled opposition called for heavy weapons and said President Bashar al-Assad should be tried for "massacres".

After massing for two days, troops backed by tanks and helicopter gunships moved on southwestern Aleppo where rebels concentrated their forces when they seized much of the northern city on July 20.

At least 29 people were killed, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, contributing to a figure of around 140 nationwide, amid growing concern about the risks of reprisals against civilians in the country's commercial capital.

The London-based watchdog said more than 20,000 people, mostly civilians, have now died since the uprising against Assad's regime erupted in March 2011.

Civilians crowded into basements seeking refuge from the bombing, with the Observatory's Rami Abdel Rahman describing the clashes as the "fiercest" of the uprising.

"There are thousands of people in the streets fleeing the bombardment. They're being terrorised by helicopter gunships flying at low altitude," said an activist, adding many had taken refuge in public parks.

Colonel Abdel Jabbar al-Oqaidi of the rebel Free Syrian Army said his forces had repulsed troops in Salaheddin district and that the regime offensive had been stopped.

"We managed to force the army to the neighbourhood of Hamdaniyeh," he told AFP on the phone, adding that while the army had been halted on the ground, artillery and gunships continued to pound the city.

Abdel Rahman said the fact the soldiers had been stopped in Salaheddin "does not necessarily mean a withdrawal as their strategy is to bombard ... to cause an exodus then launch an assault even more fierce".

An AFP correspondent said rebels were poised to launch a final raid on a strategic police post in the city centre, where 100 men armed with Kalashnikovs have been holding out for three days.

Its capture would open a corridor between Salaheddin and the rebel-held district of Sakhur, some six kilometres (four miles) to the northeast.

Meanwhile Syrian National Council chief Abdel Basset Sayda called for the rebels to be armed and said the opposition would discuss a proposed transitional government with rebel forces.

He insisted that Assad should be tried for "massacres" and not be offered asylum in any future solution.

"We want weapons that would stop tanks and jet fighters. That is what we want," he said following talks in Abu Dhabi.

He urged Arab "brothers and friends to support the Free (Syrian) Army" saying the support should be "qualitative because the rebels are fighting with old weapons".

He said the rebellion needed support in order to achieve a "significant change" in the uprising that began in March last year.

Sayda said the opposition needed a minimum of $145 million monthly to provide basic needs but had received only $15 million over several months.

He added that any future plan should not include an amnesty for Assad, saying he should be put on trial.

"The Yemeni example can't be applied in Syria," he said, referring to the amnesty given to former Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh following mass protests.

"There are massacres being committed. We believe Bashar al-Assad should be tried. He is a criminal and should not be given a shelter," he added.

Pro-government daily Al-Watan had warned the "mother of all battles" loomed in Aleppo as the government moved to reassert its authority after recapturing rebel-held districts of Damascus.

Both sides acknowledged casualties were likely to be high, and world powers have called for "maximum pressure" to stop the regime from carrying out the assault and to avert another massacre.

In late May, at least 108 people were killed near the central town of Houla, the United Nations said. On July 12, regime forces killed more than 150 people in the central village of Treimsa, the Observatory said.

Russia warned a "tragedy" was looming but said it was unrealistic to expect the government would stand by when rebels were occupying major cities.

"We are persuading the government that they need to make some first gestures," said Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

"But when the armed opposition are occupying cities like Aleppo, where yet another tragedy is brewing as I understand ... it is not realistic to expect that they will accept this."

Lavrov accused the West of aiding opposition fighters.

"Our Western partners ... together with some of Syria's neighbours are essentially encouraging, supporting and directing an armed struggle against the regime."

"The price of this is yet more blood," he said.

French President Francois Hollande specifically addressed Russia and China as he urged the UN Security Council to rapidly intervene to pre-empt an all-out civil war in Syria.

Hollande said Assad's regime was doomed and "will therefore use force right to the end".

"The only solution which will allow Syrians to reconcile and reunite is the departure of Bashar al-Assad and the formation of a transitional government," he told reporters.

Turkey warned it could "not remain an observer" as violence raged across its southern border.

"We must do what we can together in the United Nations Security Council, and also in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the Arab League, to make sure that we can make some important progress in trying to avert this appalling situation," said Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

UPDATE 1-Enbridge races to clean up Wisconsin oil spill, restart line

By Brendan O'Brien

GRAND MARSH, Wis., July 29 (Reuters) - Canada's Enbridge Inc. on Sunday raced to repair a major pipeline that spilled more than 1,000 barrels of oil in a Wisconsin field, provoking fresh ire from Washington over the latest in a series of leaks.

The spill on Friday -- almost two years to the day after a ruptured Enbridge line fouled part of the Kalamazoo River in Michigan -- has forced the closure of a major conduit for Canadian light crude shipments to U.S. refiners and threatens further damage the reputation of a company that launched a more than $3 billion expansion program just two months ago.

Enbridge said it intended to begin repairs to Line 14 late on Saturday after making 'excellent progress' in clean-up, allowing for visual inspection of the line. But it still did not know what had caused the incident and provided no estimate on when the 318,000 barrels-per-day Line 14 would resume service.

An official with the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) said two inspectors were at the site on Sunday, and that all of the pooled oil had been cleaned up.

'The line has been uncovered to begin removing the failed section and send it to a metallurgical lab for examination,' PHMSA spokesman Damon Hill said.

Officials from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources are also on site, Enbridge said in a statement.

An image of the area posted on Enbridge's website showed a patch of damp, blackened earth near a stand of trees about one-third the size of a football field. It found some oil on two small farm ponds, but said they did not connect to moving waterways and that drinking wells did not seem to be affected.

Although the spill appeared to be relatively small and quickly contained, it comes at a delicate time for Enbridge, which suffered another leak in Alberta, Canada, a month ago and endured a scathing report from U.S. safety regulators over its handling of the Michigan incident in 2010, with employees likened to the 'Keystone Kops' for their bungled response.

'Enbridge is fast becoming to the Midwest what BP was to the Gulf of Mexico, posing troubling risks to the environment,' U.S. Representative Ed Markey, the top Democrat on the Natural Resources Committee, said in a statement.

'The company must be forthcoming about this entire incident, and deserves a top-to-bottom review of their safety culture, procedures and standards,' said Markey, an outspoken critic of increasing imports of Canada's heavy oil sands crude.

Just two months ago, Enbridge kicked off one of the most sweeping expansions in its history, announcing a multibillion-dollar series of projects aimed at moving western Canada and North Dakota oil to Eastern refineries and eliminating costly bottlenecks in the U.S. Midwest.

Line 14 is a 24-inch diameter pipe that was installed in 1998, making it a relatively new line. Enbridge said it had been inspected twice in the past five years.

TWO LANDOWNERS, ONE HOUSE 'COVERED'

In most cases, smaller pipeline leaks can be repaired quickly, although regulators may require significant work if they find any cause for alarm. Following the leak in Michigan two years ago -- which spilled roughly 15 times more oil than the Wisconsin leak if initial estimates of the Friday incident prove correct -- one line was shut for more than two months.

Enbridge said two landowners had been affected and that one family had been relocated for their safety and comfort, but that most of the spill was restricted to the pipeline right-of-way. It kept its estimate of the spill at around 1,200 barrels -- about as much as would fit in six very large oil tanker trucks.

'The house right next to where the pipeline broke got covered with oil,' said Patrick Swadish, who lives about a mile northwest of the spill site in a rural area of mostly farmland, some 80 miles north of the college town of Madison.

Oil trucks, Enbridge vehicles and about a dozen crews were working in the area, which had been cordoned off by sheriff deputies. Local law enforcement officials said they had been told it may take up to 30 days to clean the area.

Enbridge also said it had briefly shut down two larger adjacent lines -- the 400,000 bpd Line 61 and the 670,000 bpd Line 6A -- but both were pumping again within a day. Together with Line 14, they form the backbone of Lakehead, a 2.5 million bpd network that is the main route for Canadian exports.

Another line, the 180,000 bpd Line 13, which carries diluents from Chicago to Edmonton, Alberta, would be restarted once it was confirmed the release had not had an impact on it, it said.

PREVIOUS SPILLS

Just weeks ago, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board blasted Enbridge's handling of the July 2010 rupture of its Line 6B near Marshall, Michigan, which led to more than 20,000 barrels of crude leaking into the Kalamazoo River.

The NTSB said it found a complete breakdown of company safety measures, and that Enbridge employees performed like 'Keystone Kops' trying to contain it. The rupture went undetected for 17 hours.

U.S. pipeline regulators fined it $3.7 million for the spill, their largest ever penalty.

The incidents, plus the most recent spill in Alberta, have caused furor just as the company seeks approval for its C$6 billion Northern Gateway pipeline to Canada's West Coast amid staunch opposition from environmental groups and native communities that warn against oil spills.

Romney?s Rude Awakening

On paper, Mitt Romney?s first overseas trip as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee looked brilliantly plotted. Stop by London, rub elbows with like-minded conservative Prime Minister David Cameron, remind viewers back home that he managed to run a pretty successful Olympics in Salt Lake City. Check. Fly to Israel, hobnob with fellow conservative and personal friend Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, remind American Jewish voters of his oft-repeated contention that President Obama has thrown Israel under the bus. Check. Catch a flight to Poland, remind Polish-American voters that the Obama administration scrapped a planned missile-defense facility in Poland in order to ?reset? relations with Russia, which historically has used Warsaw as a speed bump. Check.

Only apparently Romney failed to read the briefing paper on the somewhat testy mood among Londoners of late. At first glance, Romney?s comments that planned transportation strikes and a reported lack of security personnel were ?disconcerting? seemed downright mild. Compare them to blaring headlines in British tabloids in recent weeks claiming that the Games were going to be an unmitigated disaster (?Security Shambles Could Cause Chaos? was a typical recent headline in The Daily Mail). As it turns out, Londoners have the same proprietary view toward the Olympic Games that many parents have about their children: We can scold them, but you had better not dare.

?The problem of the foreign trips for presidential candidates is that the upside is not all that high since you are really only trying project a presidential image, but as Romney has discovered, the potential downsides are significant because any misstatement opens you up to a lot of criticism,? said James Lindsay, a senior vice president at the Council on Foreign Relations. The strategy behind Romney?s trip was a good one, Lindsay argues, in that the itinerary advances the narrative that Obama has deserted venerable allies to curry favor with adversaries -- a narrative appealing to Jewish and Polish-American voters who make up critical blocs in swing states such as Florida, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. ?But Romney has discovered that even the ?special relationship? with Britain doesn?t make up for British resentment of a Yankee coming over and raining on their great national project.?

By attending a fundraising dinner in Britain cohosted by executives at banks under investigation in London?s rate-fixing scandal, Romney also revealed once again a blind spot for perceptions that he is oblivious to the wrongdoing of Wall Street and out of touch with average voters. Likewise in Israel, Romney is reportedly planning to meet with casino magnate Sheldon Adelson. Adelson is a staunch supporter of Israel who has promised to spend as much as $100 million to defeat Obama, but he is also under investigation by the Justice Department.

Romney?s rhetorical hard line that Russia is the United States' ?number one geopolitical foe? will likely play well in Poland, where he will almost surely receive a rousing reception. It will be viewed less enthusiastically by Western European powers, however, who objected to what they perceived as George W. Bush?s unnecessarily antagonistic approach to Moscow (which culminated with Russian troops invading Georgia in 2008). Western European allies are also sensitive to Romney?s oft-repeated argument that Europe is exactly the kind of basket case that the United States will become if he is not elected.

?If I were not to get elected, we would in my view become more like Europe,? Romney told C-SPAN recently. ?With higher deficits, with a debt that could put us in a Greece- or Spain- or Italy-like circumstance, with chronic high unemployment, with low wage growth, and with a military that gets slowly but surely hollowed out so it could pay for the various programs the government would try and keep in place.?

Romney?s close affinity for Israel?s right-of-center Likud Party; his tough line on Russia and Afghanistan; and his unwillingness to propose solutions to climate change all sound familiar to many Europeans. ?Notwithstanding their widespread disappointment in President Obama, Europeans are nervous about Romney precisely because his positions remind them of George W. Bush,? said Simon Serfaty, a senior fellow at the German Marshall Fund.

NTSB investigating Dreamliner engine issue

Boeing Co. says federal regulators are investigating after one of its 787 jets had an engine issue that sparked a fire in South Carolina, but the company remains confident in its safety.

The jet is one of Boeing's most critical products. The company delivered the first 787, known as the Dreamliner, last year following several years of design and production delays. Airlines set record orders for the jet, as its lightweight, high-tech design was expected to offer travelers more comfort, provide airlines significant fuel savings and open up new routes.

Boeing said Sunday that a 787 had an engine issue Saturday while undergoing preflight runway testing in North Charleston, S.C. The Post and Courier newspaper of Charleston reported that debris from the aircraft fell on the runway at Charleston International Airport and sparked a fire in the nearby grass, which closed the airport for more than an hour.

Company spokesman Marc Birtel said the company could not disclose the nature of the engine issue due to rules surrounding the investigation.

"While the investigation is in its early stages, we are unaware of any operational issue that would present concerns about the continued safe operation of in-service 787s powered by GE engines," Boeing said in a statement. "However, should the investigation determine a need to act, Boeing has the processes in place to take action and will do so appropriately."

National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Terry Williams said there was no information available at this time but expects investigators are reviewing the case and may release some details by Monday.

The pressure is on for companies to deliver a successful fuel-efficient plane. Boeing competitor Airbus on Friday announced another delay for its A350 aircraft, which is made with a significant amount of carbon composites and is considered a potential rival.

Boeing is headquartered in Chicago but has a campus in South Carolina where it produces some of the 787 jetliners.

The law of the horse | Non-Commercial Use

One of my favourite US judges is Frank Easterbrook ? which is no surprise, given that he?s a Posner padawan. One of his more notable contributions is his famous speech on the ?law of the horse?; the idea that the internet does not need specialised law or specialised lawyers, and that general-purpose law should apply ? claiming that the internet should have its own legal concepts was considered analogous to ?law for horses?.

Easterbrook?s rationale was essentially that the internet, or indeed any new field, is not going to be correctly understood by lawyers, at least initially. Turning it into a dedicated field, in terms of both study and practical enforcement, would lead to the people tasked with making decisions and the people tasked with keeping them honest getting the wrong end of the stick, with injustice being the net outcome. Instead, people should study and practise general-purpose law, and applythat to the internet.

This argument was brought up and then sadfaced by Ian Cram, a Professor of Comparative Constitutional Law and Guardian writer commenting on the judgment in the ?twitter joke trial? (spoiler alert: they found him not guilty). Cram wrote that:

the route by which the court reached its decision is worthy of closer attention to see what it tells us about the courts? attitudes to internet speech. Noting that the 2003 Act predated the launch of Twitter and that the statutory reference to ?menacing? was itself based on a previous Act of 1935 which had first employed the term, the court took the view that English law had long been tolerant of satirical, iconoclastic, rude and even distasteful opinion about serious and trivial matters before the 2003 Act and would continue to be so in the era of social media.

On one view this stance may seem reassuring. Upon further reflection however, a more troubling analysis of the ruling is possible. Our high court is declaring alongside Easterbrook that there is no law of cyberspace; there is no law of the horse. Its disinclination to evaluate the appropriateness of legal concepts and criminal offences developed in the pre-Twitter era is disappointing, even if largely to be expected.

I disagree with this in several ways. First, I don?t agree that this is what the judgment indicates. Secondly, I don?t agree that what the judgment indicates is a bad thing. Third, I kinda agree with Easterbrook. Kinda.

What the judiciary was saying in this case was not ?there should be no dedicated field of cyberlaw?. What they were saying was ?We are not creating dedicated cyberlaw in this case?, and I think that was the right move. The case itself does not justify creating the field ? whether this man had posted what he wrote on Twitter, Facebook or in the Letters to the Editor page of the Times, the outcome should have been precisely the same. Cyberlaw is, by definition, the special treatment of things due to their presence on the internet, or the treatment of things that are unique to the internet. This is not a cyberlaw issue. This is a legal issue that happened to occur on the internet.

There are far more interesting cases out there that actually would make good cyberlaw, and answer new questions. Take the extradition of Richard O?Dwyer to the US; he?s accused of hosting a website (TVShack) that linked to pirated content. He hosted this in the UK, but pirated US content. That is an interesting case. If his actions were a crime under UK law, why not prosecute him here? If his actions were not a crime, how far does national law go in an age where things are essentially hosted in a societal, international gestalt? How do you calculate damages in copyright cases? What constitutes a ?mere conduit? under SI 2002/2013, and how does the US equivalent (S.230 of the CDA) apply if you?re prosecuting under US law? His domain names were seized, because most domains are US-hosted ? how do we reconcile an international attitude to servers and the content on them with an Americo-centric approach to the internet?s underlying infrastructure?

These are questions that need debate and answers (and probably have them already ? it?s not exactly a specialist area of mine). These are questions that would benefit from a long judgment that waxes lyrical on the role of law in society, and how society has altered due to the internet?s presence, and how law should adjust to compensate.

If we were dealing with that case, these would be questions that could be answered ? but we?re not, and even if we were, ?could be? is not the same as ?should be?. As said above, I think the courts were saying ?we?re not creating this field?, not ?this field shouldn?t be created? and they?re right to do so. We live in a constitutional democracy where Parliament is sovereign; for the courts to create an entirely new field of law or substantially pervert the meaning of existing legislation, which is what Cram is asking for, the fundamental principles the UK?s legal systems are based on would have to be entirely swept away. It?s sad that his study of comparative systems has led to him neglecting his own constitution so much.

Whether we need internet-specific law as Cram suggests, or for the internet to influence how we think about general-purpose law instead as Easterbrook would want, we definitely need change. The Computer Misuse Act, the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act, the Contempt of Court Act ? there are a myriad pieces of law that aren?t adapted to the internet age. But most of these are either legislative in nature or descended from legislation, and unless we want a nation in which the judiciary is the primary legal mover, we have to wait for Parliament to act.

A Partial Typology of Sexual Relationships in Consumer Culture ...

I?ve been reflecting on some of the ways in which people around me relate to others, specifically in regards to sexual/romantic relationships. I have noticed that these relationships often take various forms of contemporary consumer relations (i.e. how we relate to products in the market). Obviously, some of the connections are more readily drawn than others. Here are a few forms I have observed:

30 Day Free Trial:
This relationships is characterized by a risk-free, short-term trial period.? People are sexually interested in each other and pursue a relationship, but with the understanding that if things go wrong, if the product does not meet their needs and/or standards, you can always ultimately opt out and send it back. Satisfaction guaranteed!

Disposable/One Time Use:
Along with razors, cameras, and various containers, sexual relationships have also become disposable.? Disposable products are marketed in such a way as to convenience the buyer; you can use what you need but then you don?t have to deal with it afterwards, you can just throw it out.? Use people for what they can offer you and then dispose of them. Prostitution anyone? Or in some of it?s more glorified forms?

Rechargeable:
The batteries in phones, laptops, iPods, and many other electronic gadgets are rechargeable today. This increases the use-life of the product since the user can simply recharge it every time it runs low, every time its performance wanes. Here a connection can be drawn with the way in which superficial material goods dominate the ?recharging? of a relationship or even of a person?s sexual life.? Think of some of the advice that is given by presumably ignorant naive men to presumably shallow sentimental women: ?just buy her some flowers or chocolate? or vice versa ?he just needs a boys night around the poker table with some beer.? Here consumption recharges the relationship.

Bulk:
Simply put, more-for-less.? The ubiquitous bigger-is-better/more-is-better motif. (The danger here is to think that we are already beyond this way of thinking with products like the iPod nano. The miniturization of products with infinite applications is but another form within the same logic.) The locker room praise for sleeping with as many women as possible comes to mind?

Warranty:
Whether its 1 year, 5 years, 10 years, or a lifetime warranty, these product ?buffers? protect you from dissatisfaction; varying degrees of security at a variety of costs.? Certain kinds of marriage counseling and self-help regimes seem to fit this notion.

All of these types, I think, are driven by a logic of utility, satisfaction, and security that is radically at odds with the way Jesus relates to people and he suggests others ought to relate to each other. As for sexual relations, the life of Jesus is rather bare of information, but that the logic at work in consumer culture pervades throughout our sexual relations should already give us pause.

Obviously (or at least I hope this is self-evident), I am making an argument against these kinds of relationships.? One can see how the capitalist market is a destructive metaphor for sexual relationships.? What is additionally worrisome, is that the Christians have largely embraced this metaphor (perhaps without thinking or noticing).? I suspect that one marker of this shift towards the co-opting of sexual relations by consumer culture, within the church, has to do with the way the state defines and controls the terms and parameters of marriage, a Christian sacrament.? Of course, this is not all. The burden of insufficient thought about sexual relationships both Christians and non-Christians does not rest on ?civil society.?? The church has not done sufficient theological work on sexual relations either.? Both in Catholic and Protestant circles, discussions tend to revolve around an all-or-nothing understanding of sexuality (e.g. either you?re married and therefore a sexual creature, or you are not married and therefore not). This is both theologically dangerous and destructive as it ignores the sexuality of God?s creation (a form of neo-gnosticism?).? Our task then, is to think about what other metaphors for sexual relations Scripture might hold, and how we might nuance the duality of the married/single framework of thinking about sexual relations. (Songs of Solomon might be a good place to start. When was the last time you heard a sermon, devotion, Sunday School lesson on that?!)

This really is a partial typology with some half-baked thoughts added on. What kinds of questions, dear readers, do some of these initial thoughts provoke for you? Do you agree that sexual relations in the west reflect consumer culture? If yes, what other examples might you give? What do you think the task of the church is in response to the consumer culture of sexual relations dominating the west? What kinds of questions ought we to ask ourselves to initiate further conversation on this kind of discussion of sexual ethics? What might be at stake in such a discussion? What are some theological reasons that sexual relations might/should concern Christian ethics?

How summer thunderstorms could be punching new holes in the ozone layer

A study looking at conditions in the lower stratosphere, where the ozone layer resides, suggests a link between climate change and the amount of ultraviolet radiation reaching Earth's surface.

This NOAA satellite image shows clouds cover the Northern and Eastern U.S. There have been reports of severe thunderstorm development across the Northeast. A recent study has tied summer thunderstorms to climate change.

Global warming could open new holes in Earth's ozone layer at latitudes that until now have seemed immune to the ozone destruction that recurs over Antarctica and the Arctic, a new study warns.

The underappreciated keys to this conundrum: water vapor and temperatures in the lower stratosphere, where the ozone layer appears. Both, the researchers say, reach summertime values over the continental US known to encourage ozone-destroying chemicals that are already aloft to attack ozone.

The team makes no attempt to project when significant erosion might be expected to occur. And researchers have yet to make the measurements that would confirm that the reactions the study describes are occurring. Rather, it points to conditions that are appearing and are known to stimulate stratospheric ozone destruction.

The results suggest a clear link between climate change and the amount of harmful ultraviolet radiation reaching Earth's surface, says James Anderson, a Harvard atmospheric scientist and the lead author of the study, which appears in Friday's issue of the journal Science.

When people talk about global warming, "most people would have their backyard warmer than it is now," he says. But global warming "is not about that," he adds. "It's about these feedbacks that couple the system into irreversible paths forward. That's the primary concern."

At ground level, ozone is a pollutant ? a key element of smog. In the stratosphere, however, it shields organisms on Earth from destructively excessive levels of ultraviolet light from the sun.

The study by Dr. Anderson's team is based on well-established atmospheric chemistry and observations over the continental United States of an underappreciated character in the ozone story: summer thunderstorms.

In essence, the team found that thunderstorms and their powerful, convective updrafts drive unexpectedly large concentrations of water vapor high into the stratosphere. The high concentrations of water vapor alter conditions in ways that encourage ozone destruction when the man-made chemicals associated with ozone depletion are present.

If the frequency and intensity of mid-latitude storms increase with time, as some global-warming models suggest, Anderson and his colleagues say they are concerned that ozone destruction at mid-latitudes could become one of those irreversible feedbacks.

"This is a really important find to nail down," says Mary Barth, an atmospheric scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., noting that it begs for field measurements to see how valid the warning is and how widely any effect might reach.

Dr. Barth, who was not part of Anderson's team, and colleagues have just completed a field project gathering data on thunderstorms and their impact on atmospheric chemistry, including ozone reactions.

In fact, Anderson's team initially was working on another climate problem: the formation of cirrus clouds and their effect on climate. Clouds represent one of the big areas of uncertainty in climate models. And cirrus clouds can have a warming effect on climate by allowing sunlight through but trapping heat rising up from underneath. The tops of thunderheads are one source of cirrus clouds, which assume their feather-like appearance as high-altitude winds blow across the tops of the thunderheads, giving them their anvil shape.

Researchers have known that the most powerful thunderstorms, whose strong updrafts can punch through the boundary between the troposphere (where weather happens) and the stratosphere, can deposit large amounts of water vapor in the stratosphere. But Anderson's team was using high-altitude aircraft to measure water vapor rising the tops of a broader range of thunderstorms.

"We weren't hunting for big game here," he says. The aircraft were taking measurements from garden-variety summer thunderstorms over the Midwest and along the East Coast.

"To our huge surprise, we discovered that those convective storms were not simply distributing water in the upper troposphere," he says. Rather, they were lofting water vapor three to four miles into the stratosphere. Plumes often reached altitudes exceeding 60,000 feet.

Anderson had been deeply involved in studies of ozone depletion over Antarctica and the Arctic. What researchers learned about Arctic ozone depletion in particular triggered alarm bells. There, ozone depletion was all about the interplay between water vapor, temperature, the ozone-destroying compounds, and tiny particles known as sulfate aerosols ? which act as tiny platforms on which chemical reactions can occur.

As water-vapor concentrations rose, so did the temperature at which the ozone-eating reactions could begin to take place, suggesting that the temperatures and water vapor were the key controls.

Under commonly observed conditions of water vapor and aerosol concentrations, the temperature at which ozone-depleting reactions would take place is about minus 119 degrees F., the researchers explain. Double the amount of water vapor, and the temperature at which reactions start rises by about 10 degrees F., bringing it within the range of temperatures commonly found in the stratosphere during mid-latitude summers.

Anderson's team studied data from the continental US, but it notes that similar conditions may appear over other parts of the globe.

The study points to "the potential for a pretty significant effect on stratospheric ozone at latitudes where we normally wouldn't think that would happen," said Mario Molina, an atmospheric scientist at the University of California at San Diego who shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1995 with the late Frank Rowland. The two worked out the chemistry behind stratospheric ozone depletion and chlorofluorocarbons, once widely used as refrigerants and aerosol-spray propellants.

"Many ecological systems are quite sensitive to ultraviolet radiation, and they have not evolved the repair mechanisms for more severe ozone depletion," Dr. Molina said in a prepared statement.

The 1987 Montreal Protocol and subsequent agreements have played important roles in halting production of key ozone-depleting chemicals, Anderson notes. But these compounds remain in the stratosphere for decades. Moreover, the sulfate aerosols there occur naturally: They are not affected by controls on sulfur emissions at ground level.

Without reductions in greenhouse-gas emissions ? especially carbon dioxide, which itself remains in the atmosphere for centuries ? ozone holes once limited to the poles could become regular summertime features over some of the most populated places on the planet, the team suggests.

With the Montreal Protocol, many people said in effect, problem solved ? let's move on, Anderson says, acknowledging that even he had dealt with ozone destruction and global warming as separate issues.

People "completely forgot about the remarkable dependence of the destruction of ozone on water and temperature," he says.

Memories of a self-help Guru ? T-Thoughts Team Building - Tirian

Do ?Self Help? & ?Management? books really work?

When Covey?s breakthrough book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People first hit the bookshelves I was in my mid-twenties. I was sceptical of the ?self-help? book genre, especially the apparently superficial promise that it would be possible to become highly proficient in something in a short number of simple steps. I assumed that this was merely a money making tactic. I was finally convinced by others to read Covey?s landmark book, however, and thus cautiously embarked on a road of appreciating how this genre can help people.

Taking a leap 20 years further down the track, and I found myself invited as one of only three high profile international keynote speakersto give a keynote and share the stage with Stephen Covey, at a strategic leadership event. We presented together to almost 2,000 business leaders in the Middle East. To hear of Covey?s death set off one of those lightning flash memory sequences encompassing memories of the first time I discovered this genre, through to memories of meeting Covey and presenting alongside him, and finally to the end of the cycle ? hearing of his passing away.

The self help habit

The 7 Habits book alone has sold more than 25 million copies in 38 languages since first publication. What made Covey?s book so successful was that it was one of the most sincere attempts at the time to go much deeper than providing simple rules to follow. It tackled the issue of dealing with ingrained behavioural styles and habits and the values that shape them. If anything, the 7 Habits title didn?t do the concept justice.

As the concept took off, it became a type of corporate religion. Fortune 500 executives lined up for top-dollar seminars where Covey was treated like a rock star. Hillel Italie (Washington Post) summarised the phenomenon by saying that, ?Covey had articulated a philosophy that ? however platitudinous it seemed to detractors ? transcended business and spoke to the centuries-old American values of self-improvement and self-reliance. Covey challenged readers and listeners to think about their character and integrity and a sense of one?s place not only relative to. . . one?s professional standing but one?s place in the cosmos.?

This approach actually had very little to do with business and everything to do with character.

Too much of a good thing?

A quick search on Amazon for the key words ?self help? confronts the browser with 447,108 results. It has been calculated that $750 million worth of business books each year have been sold in America alone, but research shows that managers fail to finish four in every five business books they buy. Further research has shown that out of the 43 companies categorised and celebrated as ?Excellent? in Tom Peter?s seminal work ?In Search of Excellence?, 2 out of 3 lost that top rating within 5 years of publication of the book. In the book ?Witch Doctors?, Economist editors Micklethwait and Wooldridge show from their research that much of the advice dispensed by the self help sources is ?faddish, riddled with contradictions and jargon, based on simplistic formulas, no more reliable than tribal witch doctors? medicine.?

The bookstores are crammed with experts trying to sell us success in a few simple steps, but if it was this simple wouldn?t we all be doing it? Wouldn?t we all already be highly successful? So what can the average person do to navigate this minefield of expert advice and glean something useful?

Why self-help strategies don?t always work

In the book ?Fatland? Greg Critser reveals that more than a generation?s worth of faddish weight-loss programs have only served only to produce the fattest generation of Americans on record. Knowing what to do and being able to actually do it are both very different things. Just as diets don?t usually work, there are no short cuts in improving your life. Passively reading a book or attending a seminar will not produce all the permanent changes you need to make your life perfect. Only picking out the relevant gems and putting in a lot of hard follow up work will. Inspiration and motivation are only the start, not the entire package needed to improve ones self.

The new generation of self-help books are often written by more qualified social psychologists, neurologists, human behaviour scientists etc who reveal why we have trouble acting on advice and the scientific factors involved shaping in habitual behaviours and how they can be changed. Understanding the roots of our behaviours is a good first step to knowing how to manage them effectively.

Management theory has always alternated between cold mathematics and warm humanism, and the pendulum is currently swinging towards the importance of developing ?soft? skills. We will need to know how to integrate the self-help concepts into our leadership styles and behaviours in order to ensure real lasting development. Covey was someone who managed to bridge the gap that can exist between theory and practice, and he should be remembered for his significant contribution to the field. I will certainly always remember the passion and perseverance of a man committed to making a difference in individuals? lives.

The most helpful self-help advice I have received is from the ancient Serenity Prayer which says that we must learn to accept what we cannot change, to find courage to change what we can change, and to seek wisdom in discerning the difference. If something from the myriad of books, seminars and other self-help input can helps us to action this prayer, then undoubtedly we will be able to make the difference needed for ourselves.

What do you think? Do self help and management books work?

The Atheist Conservative: ? Who's buying the wine?

Daniel J. Mitchell writes at Townhall about American tax-payers paying the OECD to subvert America.

The $100 million that American taxpayers send to Paris every year to subsidize the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development is ? on a per-dollar basis ? the most destructively wasteful part in the federal budget.

The video below will give you some evidence.

But the video also is a couple of years old, so it doesn?t even include some of the more recent and most outrageous examples of OECD perfidy.

The OECD has allied itself with the nutjobs from the so-called Occupy movement to push for bigger government and higher taxes.

The OECD, in an effort to promote redistributionism, has concocted absurdly misleading statistics claiming that there is more poverty in the US than in Greece, Hungary, Portugal, or Turkey.

The OECD is pushing a ?Multilateral Convention? that is designed to become something akin to a World Tax Organization, with the power to persecute nations with free-market tax policy.

The OECD has endorsed Obama?s class-warfare agenda, publishing documents endorsing ?higher marginal tax rates? so that the so-called rich ?contribute their fair share.?

The OECD redistributes tax dollars to ?corrupt and dictatorial regimes?.

Richard Rahn excoriates the statist swamp in his Washington Times column:

?The OECD was formed in 1960 to promote trade and investment among the developed countries. Over the years, it has morphed into an organization promoting higher taxes and the redistribution of income. ? U.S. taxpayers are supporting high-salaried international bureaucrats who are advocating higher taxes on others, most notably U.S. taxpayers, but do not pay income taxes themselves.?

Dennis Kleinfeld wrote for IFC [International Finance Corporation] Review. He starts with a bit of history and explains how OECD bureaucrats live a good life at our expense:

?The OECD Secretary General, Deputy Secretaries, and heads of the Directorates are non-elected administrators and policy-makers, who live in Paris tax free (except for the Americans), travel first class, live first class, and whose every expense is paid for by the member states from taxes or money borrowed.

They keep a well-stocked wine-cellar at their headquarters too. Nice! But also paid for largely out of US taxes. (See the picture of it in the video.)

These are the guys who tell everyone else to pay their fair share of taxes and share in making sacrifices for the greater good of all. ? I am quite convinced that the OECD functionaries have proceeded under the fixed ideological beliefs that global social happiness and economic prosperity can only be achieved when individuals subordinate their economic freedom and liberties to the interests of the collective, a utopian view of society. They are wrong. The state of the world proves otherwise.?

Removing American-financed subsidies from the OECD won?t necessarily put an end to this corrupt and statist bureaucracy. But at least American taxpayers won?t be violated to subsidize the pampered officials who drive the OECD?s biased agenda. And without America support, it is highly doubtful that the OECD would have any ability to bully nations into expanding the burden of government. That?s a win-win situation for America and the world.

Here?s his video:

Did you know that each day you have more than 50,000 random thoughts flying around in your head? You might find it interesting to note that we all have voices in our head. Sometimes the voice is calm and reassuring providing you with great confidence in your abilities. Other times, this voice is the negative and self limiting voice that calls into question all of your deficiencies. The voice that brings up all of the past failures and shortcomings and reminds you of all of the things you have going against you.

In sports, this voice is the last thing you hear before you take action. In interaction with others, it is sometimes the voice that challenges your worth in relation to others and weakens our own esteem.

Success principles are not secrets; they are hiding in plain view.

Famed journalist, Edward R. Murrow remarked, ?The obscure we eventually see. The completely obvious, it seems, takes longer.? They are not reserved for the rich or famous, but to everyone who will apply them. We are inborn by our creator with tools to guide us and protect us and to open the world of abundance to us; if only we will let it.

Like understanding the law of gravity will place you on your bottom if you violate it, principles of success are laws of nature. Every idea you produce consciously produces subconscious activity to fulfill what was first created in your mind.

A farmer choosing what to plant in a field is like the conscious mind. The field itself is the subconscious mind. Whatever the farmer plants, the field grows. The field does not possess a will of its own; it must grow what was planted. It would be ridiculous to think of the farmer planting corn and having beans grow. In the same way your subconscious mind will carry out the actions our conscious mind directs. If the farmer neglects the field and plants nothing, there will still be growth. The growth will be wild and weedy based on whatever was accidentally planted.

Over time the field will be out of control with weeds. In the same way our minds, if not consciously directed, will fill with mental weeds.

There is good news!

The good news is that just like any other skill, you can learn to take greater control of your inner voice and in doing so, create greater control of your life.

?The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.? -William James

Create Your Destiny

with the

Power Of

Questions and Affirmations

________________________________________

The Power of Positive Questions

Most people ask themselves the wrong question which produces a negative subconscious effect. You can learn to program your super computer brain by learning to ask yourself the right questions. The key is to ask yourself solution-based, positive and empowering questions rather than negative, disempowered, problematic questions.

In the past, you may have asked questions like the following. ?Why am I so fat?? ?Why is my life such a failure?? ?Why do bad things always happen to me?? ?Why am I so stupid?? These questions and all the ones like it take a terrible toll on you.

First they start with a negative assumption, stated as fact with the question supporting the wrong conclusion. If you ask yourself, ?Why is my life in the crapper?? any answer you give provides support to the negative assumption. This can be compared to an attorney taking a witness from the opposing side down the path to prove the lawyer?s point.

Next time you find yourself doing this, interrupt yourself with the quip, ?Objection your Honor; leading the witness!?

Improving your condition comes through asking yourself better questions. This allows the creative inspiration to work through our subconscious to bring about the conditions or magnetize the conditions we seek.

You not only have the ability, but also all the resources necessary to learn anything you need to learn to fulfill any ambition or achieve any goal you desire. The goal for your questions to yourself in any situation should be outcome or solution based. The assumption is that there is an issue that needs to be fixed. Rather than what was presented above, look at an approach leading to an action conclusion. ?What do I need to change about my habits to get to my fitness goal?? ?What do I want to do with my life that gives me meaning and satisfaction?? ?What do I need to do differently to change this string of results?? ?What can I learn and apply from this?? ?What is affecting my mood that makes me feel my life is not going the right direction??

Tony Robbins asserts, ?Questions provide the key to unlocking our unlimited potential.? Probably the single best question you can begin to ask yourself in any situation is, ?What outcome do I want from this event/situation??

You may certainly wish to adapt this slightly, but when you go into a situation, whether it is a business meeting or negotiation or class, knowing your desired outcome is vital. As I began to work on this habit in earnest for myself, I was simply amazed at how many actions I took and how many activities I worked on without asking this clearly up front? I need to research a better mortgage for my house. What is my ideal outcome? Is it lower payments, less interest over time, more house for my money, flexibility? Without knowing the right question, the answers don?t help much. What outcome do I desire for my relationship with my spouse and children? Do I know and plan or just let it happen?

We have the power through understanding and training of our subconscious minds to plant the seeds and affirm health, security, happiness, abundance. We also have the opportunity to allow society?s programming to plant the seeds of lack, insecurity, fear, doubt, and negativity. I am not speaking about deep hypnosis or anything out of the ordinary.

It takes practice to keep your mind free from worry and insecurity. It takes dedication to constantly feed your mind new information and positive stimuli that will provide positive associations. It takes vigilance to associate with positive people and positive influences. Make sure your questions ask for what you want, not what you don?t want.

Remember?your mind is a supercomputer. In addition to the information and educational programming you provide as input to your computer, how you talk to yourself and the questions you ask is the most influential factor in your outcome.

The Simple Power of Affirmations

We need to find a way to control our thoughts to keep them as allies rather than adversaries. In her book, The Secret Door To Success, the late Florence Scovel Shinn talks about having a Watchman at the gate of our thoughts. Her assertion is that we have the power to choose our thoughts. She uses an analogy of a single sheep dog controlling frightened sheep into the pen through gentle determination.

?We cannot always control our thoughts, but we can control our words, and repetition impresses the subconscious, and we are then master of the situation.?

Although her book was written in the early 1900s, she hits upon a tool that is one of the best and yet underutilized tool for controlling and programming your thoughts, the power of affirmation.

Affirmation as a mental programming technique is an extremely powerful tool, yet one that is scoffed at by many. Affirmations are tremendously misunderstood and very much underutilized. What you may not realize is that you use them all the time although most time not to your benefit. Affirmations are simply statements of intent. You can develop into all that you desire to be based on what you chose to affirm about yourself.

I Am The Greatest!!

Mohammad Ali is one of the most widely known and recognized sports figures as a former heavyweight boxing champion of the world. Ali is famous for his repeating of an affirmation he used with great effectiveness to convince not only himself, but also his opponents and the rest of the world. ?I am the Greatest!? Mohammad Ali?s affirmation created his legacy.

Like goals, affirmations work best when they are worded in the present tense as ?I am? or ?I achieve? type statements. The mind cannot hold a negative. Affirmations are nothing more than affirming the truth as you wish it to be to instruct your subconscious mind to take action in that direction. It is really very simple.

Affirmations help you believe in your dreams and what you wish to be. Belief is essential to convincing your subconscious to act the direction you want to go. Affirmations are like exercise. You will not see immediate results until you create the habit which over time helps you build strength in yourself and in your beliefs. This ultimately affects your actions which affect your results.

An affirmation in some cases might be a lie at present, but you are in a sense trying to convince your subconscious that it can be true to make it a reality in the future.

?To affirm anything is to state that it is so, and to maintain this as being true in the face of all evidence to the contrary. Repeating an affirmation is leading the mind to that state of consciousness where it accepts that which it wishes to believe.?-Ernest Holmes

Sometimes we inadvertently affirm and reinforce old established beliefs. ?I am so stupid.? ?I?m going to lose this account.? ?I always flub this shot.? ?There is no way I can make this deadline.? ?I gain weight just smelling chocolate.? ?I need a drink.? ?I am a horrible golfer.? I can?t speak in public.? ?I could never write a book.? ?I am such a klutz.? ?I never win.? ?I?m not smart enough to do that.? ?I could never do something like that.? ?I am such an idiot sometimes.? ?I would lose my head if it were not attached.?

Have you ever said things like this to yourself; or worse to others about yourself? Of course you have?we all have done this. This kind of talk while sometimes self effacing and done for positive effect, can actually have negative consequences. If taken to extreme and developed into a habit or pattern of self talk, the message and programming can be damaging. The issue that separates people is their underlying attitudes and beliefs about themselves. How do you respond to setbacks and adversity? Do you take it in stride, or do you take the glum and negative approach of ?this always happens to me, I never catch a break, etc.?

The other choice is to create and affirm and reinforce our desired positive beliefs. This happens all day long, moment by moment, and takes hold a little at a time. ?This is easy.? ?I only eat when I am hungry.? ?I feel great when I exercise.? ?I know I can drop the pounds when I put my mind to it.? ?What an awesome day!? ?I don?t run and hide from problems, I attack.? ?I feel great!? ?My life is really working.? ?I see a lot of opportunities in this situation.?

I have one friend who repeats to herself daily an affirmation of, ?I feel healthy, I feel happy, I feel terrific!? Every time I see this person, I can tell it is real, applied and working in her life. Another friend of mine, when asked how she is, replies glumly sounding like the always depressed Eyore from Winnie The Pooh, ?I?m here.?

You make the call which one is progressing faster in their lives. Can you guess which one has more abundant opportunities ?luckily? come her way?
